CoRe’s 2018 24h Daytona
CoRe Finishes P8 in GTE
– the first iRacing endurance event in this year, the 2018 24 hours of Daytona, was the race to begin with for making a good impression. CoRe SimRacing was participating with their Ferrari 488 GTE machine including Ricardo Castro Ledo, Janne Kiuru, Jere Pääkkönen, Maxime Pauly, Santeri Kallunki and Maik Paluch. Despite a solid qualification result by Ricardo, the 24 hours race distance left its’ marks on the drivers and on the car. Some server issues, bad driving standards and unlucky moments made the CoRe line-up only finish in P8 in class.
With the qualifying session days before, Ricardo set a very nice laptime into the results sheet making the CoRe guys start the 24h race on 3rd position. The green flag flew and already a lot of incidents happend. The traffic and lapping left some scars on the CoRe Ferrari machine. Ricardo was able to keep the car clean as best as possible – nevertheless, after Janne took over for the next stints, he was involved in an incident with the Redline DP. Damage on the car was limited but the team knew that it takes more than just drive fast. Maxime had to pay hard after he avoided a spin in turn one. Running wide, going through the grass and then a couple of corners later, getting collected and rear-ended by traffic, CoRe had to pit and repair the damage. From P3 the team dropped to P7 – Maik & Santeri took the car into the night.
Santeri, Maik and Jere were able to chase down P6 and P5, but sadly due a disconnect, the team dropped back to P9. After the tough night, the team was several laps down from the leaders and sticked to their position. For the last couple of hours, Ricardo and Janne took over again and tried to make the best out of it. Less topspeed, damage and a heavy feeling car made things a bit frustrating. In the end, after 24 hour of Daytona’s tough night race, CoRe SimRacing’s line-up was only able to bring an ordinary 8th position in class over the finish line.
Few hours before the finish, Janne had to admit : “Quite frustrating to do this race, the car looks fine but we are 0.5s too slow. Even if you drive well, you are gonna be slower than all other cars in front.” The potential and pace was there but the luck was sadly not : “Too bad that we got a disconnect which threw the guys back even further. Without that, we could have continued our chase to P5.” – said Maik after Ricardo crossed the finish line. The next endurance race by iRacing will be the 12h of Sebring, where CoRe definitely tries to defend their last win.
